About
I am a pastor, theologian, and author interested in the intersection of theology and culture. I write and present regularly in academic and public settings concerning the roles of the visual arts, visual culture, aesthetics, and imagination in the theology of the Church. I hold a Ph.D. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary (2017) with a concentration in Theology and Culture. In addition, I have a M.Div. from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis (2010) and a B.A. in Studio Art from Concordia University Chicago (2005).
My research looks at the visual nature of Luther's theology and correlates it to the visual culture of his day, with a special emphasis on his relationship with the artist Lucas Cranach the Elder and his Law and Gospel paintings.
This blog represents my own explorations into seeing with the "eyes of faith" through my sporadic forays into the practices of the visual arts, graphic design, and occasional reflections on the relationship of theology and the arts. I have a number of lectionary related artwork and graphic design throughout the site. If you find anything useful for a Christian congregational ministry setting, you are free to use the images uploaded on this site. I only ask that you give credit where possible. You do, however, need my written consent if you are working outside of the congregational setting and/or seeking monetary gain through publication, etc. See "Use of Images" for more info.
